June 2002
Join the Club
It’s Fun!

So, you think you might want to go fast..you might like making new friends... a good excuse to travel to other parts of your region... getting involved.
Well, boat racing will satisfy the “need for speed” in everyone. If you haven’t done so, you need to pay your membership dues. If you just want to receive the newsletter, you still need to pay the dues as a non-racing member. If you have any questions about joining or need further information, please call our commodore, Eric Petersen at 516-312-8735

COMMODORE’S CORNER
The first race of the season is just around the corner. June 30th is our first race at Cold Spring Pond. It is important that everyone arrive early, not only to set up your own equipment, but to help in setting up the club equipment Driver’s meeting will be at 11 a.m. sharp. There will be a pre-race inspection of all boats by Jason Pickerell 20 minutes prior to the driver’s meeting. That means you must be set up before the drivers meeting. We plan to start racing promptly at 12 noon. Prior to race day, you should go through a simple checklist:

  • Is your boat structurally sound?
  • Does the throttle work property? The engine must shut off
    when you release the throttle.
  • Is your steering system in proper working order?
  • Is personal safety gear in good shape?
  • How is the overall condition of all of your equipment?

If you are planning to go testing prior to race day, remember that you are representing the club every time you get in your boat Choose your testing site wisely, and don’t abuse the time spent there.
If you are not planning on racing, please show up and support the club. There are plenty of non-racing activities we can use your help with. We are always short on patrol boat drivers, scorers and clock operators. We could also use pictures of the races, pits and spectators for promotional purposes.
Hope to see you June 30th.

Thank you to Gary Joyce of Boaters Digest for giving us some ink in the May issue. There are a couple of people I know who work at publications who have been kind enough to help promote both EORC and AOMC. Times Review Newspapers and Boating World have also done briefs which resulted in phone calls from people interested in joining. I just thought we should thank them for their interest and help.

There were 12 members present Erik Petersen, Paul Sumereau, Ron and Judy Mediatore, Jason Pickerell, Pete Voss, Diane Murray, Carole Terry. Dan Kasten.
Bob Rusnak, Joe Hancock and Howie Pickerell.

The Treasurer’s Report was read and accepted.

Old Business:
Minutes of April meeting accepted as printed in newsletter. No additions or corrections.
Race program completed and passed around to those present. All agree programs are fabulous. Also race posters are finished and will be ready for distribution to membership at the next meeting. (Copies of both the flyer and program are part of the minutes). Jason indicated that we need new pictures with several options such as digital pictures or disposable camera photos. It was suggested that perhaps Pam could take some from the patrol boat.
New logo was submitted by Jason and approved. It was suggested and agreed to by unanimous decision that the students who worked on the logo be given a pizza parlor at the club’s expense, including pizza and soda for the class. It was brought to the attention of the members present that the Novice Class rule requiring a 2.5 inch minimum full diameter propeller ring should be dropped from the rules.
Grand Prix Rules were reviewed from years ago and modifications made. Since the rule book printing is imminent, Jason will Incorporate the rule changes in the new rule book and provide the secretary with a copy for incorporation into the minutes at the next meeting, if not sooner.
It was agreed that boats and drivers must be ready IS minutes prior to the driver’s meeting so Inspections can take place.
Antique Outboard Motor Club will have a larger meeting than expected and will be doing exhibitions and “fly by” at Flanders race. A discussion was held as to whether AOMC people should be required to Join EORC in order to be covered by the insurance. It was agreed that this was not necessary’; any antique boat that takes part in a fly by will have to pay the usual entry fee for race day.
Additional discussion was held regarding EORC taking part in the SSOA race at Taunton. There is concern because AOF entry fees would be $25 per day in addition to the daily entry fees, which when added to the cost of traveling to Taunton would make the cost of the race too high. Furthermore with respect to points, Bob Rusnak raised the issue that EORC points should not be awarded for an “off Island” race because it would penahze members that could not attend. It was agreed that we should support SSOA, and SSOA should support EORC, but that no EORC points would be given for anyone who wants to race at Taunton, only AOF points, and the Taunton race will be deleted from the club schedule. There was further discussion about a possible fourth race on LI. Flanders
II is not likely because of cancellations last year and the year before. Orient is a possibility. It was decided to table the issue of a fourth race until after Flanders I on July 14th based on turn out and interest in a fourth race.

New Business:
The Southampton Trustees are insisting that they be listed on the insurance policy. Paul does not think this will be a problem.
It was decided with regard to the Antique Outboard meet at Flanders that anyone taking part in a flyby should pay the $25 entry fee. It was agreed that anyone
who puts a boat in the water should pay the entry fee.
Also, AO should be reminded that there are no open pipes allowed in or out of the water at any time. A motion was made to purchase ten (10) bouncy buoys at $10.99 each, with the new rule that any driver who hits or otherwise damages a buoy is obligated to pay for a new one. The turn judge will be the final anthority as to whether or not a driver has damaged a buoy and there will be no appeal. Motion was seconded and unanimously carried. Diane will purchase the buoys in red.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

The Long Island Chapter of Antique Outboard Motor Club

The swap meet was a huge success! We signed up 39 members for the Long Island Chapter and one person joined EORC. Let’s welcome Mike Mead to the club! Several people asked for information on EORC and said they were interested in being on our mailing list with the hope of joining.

Thank you, Ralph Armbrust, for hosting the meet!
