The Long Island Chapter
of Antique Outboard Motor Club
Sponsors Swap Meet
Sunday, May 19, 2002
Hosted by Ralph Armbrust, Main Road, Cutchogue
If you are interested in finding out more about this exciting, new
Long Island dub or if you would like to attend the Swap Meet,
please contact Pam Young at 631-722-3160 or
pyliny@aol.com This is a
great opportunity to dig out your old “stuff” to swap with
your cronies, old new.
It is looking quite promising that we can also hold a swap meet at
the Flanders Men’s Club race on July 14. We hope we can get some
people with vintage boats from the Antique and Classic Boating
Society to show off their toys as well. We have the makings for a
great time within the three clubs when we join forces.
Some of the AOMC folks have even expressed interest in joining
EORC and fulfilling their need for speed. If you would like to
join the Antique Outboard Motor Club’s Long Island Chapter,
contact Pam Young it 631-722-3160. |

Minutes of Meeting - 3/21/02
Attendees: Dan Kasten , Pete Voss, Diane Murray, Erik Petersen, Jason Pickerell, Dave Young, Pam Young, Carole Terry, Dave Young Jr., Doug Pearsall, Joe Hancock, John Harth. Frank Miller—Welcome Frank and Joe! Meeting started at 8:31 PM.
Reading of Old minutes by Erik Petersen.
Discussion of Old Business and Race Sites
Race Site in Westhampton—Discussion regarding the fact that the Mayor had approached Howie Pickerell. Pete Voss had looked at the site and thought that the pits were about 250 feet from where the vehicles would be parked. That the area to park the vehicle was fenced so that there was no way to get to the water. Pete suggested that someone else review the situation.
Pete mentioned that perhaps Tiana Bay would be an alternative spot, but that the tides and the moon would have to be aligned. Erik and Jason reviewed the tide charts obtained by Pam Young and it was determined that we could run at Tiana Bay on the 30th of June. The race would need to begin at I 1:30am, a bit earlier than usual. Someone needs to check to determine what ambulance corps. would be required.
Ad was put in Association of Marine Industries (AMI) brochure. Membership was discussed. Pam needs a current listing of all members.
It was noted that there is a conflict with the July 14th race at Flanders and Whitney Point, NY. It would affect 2-3 members. It was determined to keep the date at Flanders.
RACES:
June 30— Tiana Bay
July 14— Flanders (Firm)
Sept. 20—North Sea
Oct 6— Cold Spring Pond
Erik discussed the brochure that he had put together (looks great!)
Brochure covers: Classes, Officers, Pictures, Races and how it is run and the flags, Boat racing in general, Points and how determined and a membership application. Erik needed info on Novice Class (Jason volunteered) and the Antique Class (Dave Sr. volunteered).
It was suggested to remove the word “stock” from the headings and just have it be “Outboard Racing.”
Dave Young mentioned the possibility of racing in Oakdale with assistance by the Oakdale Yacht Club as a potential sponsor.
Pam and Dave Young discussed the Swap Meet for the
Long Island Chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor
Club to be held at the Flanders Race, July 14th.
Pam discussed the new additions to the EORC web page—message board and a membership application to be added. Pam thanked Sean Wilson, the Webmaster, for all his work! She had gotten several comments on how good the web site was.
The posters were discussed and it was decided to purchase 100 posters. Erik said he would work with Pam on getting the content, etc. determined.
Discussion of the Novice Class:
People have talked it up and there is a lot of interest. Jason Plckerell has a prototype of a “shield” for the propeller—the cost would be $25.00. Contact Jason for more information.
Jason volunteered to take all calls for the Novice Class. In addition, he and Dave Young volunteered to hold a pre-race session for the Novice Class to discuss setup of boats, engines, rules, racing, etc.
The Rule Book, which is under print, will be issued to all members and new members.
The discussion of release forms for minors and racers was discussed. It was suggested that Paul Sumereau ask Clancey and Clancey, our insurers, for its form to be used.
Discussion occurred as to the rule of no side turning fins on runabouts (only a center fin), it was determined that this rule was implemented for safety reasons.
It was determined that for all classes that the wording such as, “All entries to be approved by the Race Committee” will be inserted in the Rule Book.
New Business:
Deep V-Class: Dave Young discussed that this would be a special event class and that it would be a “Factory Dealer Class.” It would be a fiberglass V Bottom boat and that a “dealer bought engine with no modifications” would be used. The engine specifications still need to be determined. A boat would cost approximately
$1,200 and there would be an additional cost of $200 per boat, which would then be contributed back a to a local BOCES for the procurement of a boat for each BOCES (Four BOCES in total). This would be a team event and Lighthouse Marina, Goldsmith’s Marina, Oakdale Yacht had expressed interest and other marinas were seriously considering entering this class. Dave Young Jr. is finishing a boat that will go on display.
It was discussed that in connection with the Swap Meet for the LI Chapter of the Antique Boat Club that perhaps its members could “run” their boats during
intermission at the Flanders Race.
Discussion of a Promotional Committee occurred. It was voted that Erik Petersen, Pam Young and Jason Pickerell would be the members of this committee
It was discussed to have the Newsletter emailed to members were possible and others would receive a hard copy.
The Logo was discussed and Erik said that he was working on an updated version.
Erik requested that if an issue came up that needed immediate attention that he would call and/or email directors! members to get their input.
RACE DAYS:
Racers need to arrive by 9:30 am
Racers need to have boats/engines set-up by 10:30 am for inspection.

PROMOTING BOAT RACING
Our new Commodore, Eric Petersen, has been busy putting together a program that can be handed out at the races. It is important that we encourage spectators to come to the races...they could be our future boat racers! Newspapers, Channel 12 and radio stations are going to be informed about upcoming races, race results and events to get the word out.
Carole Terry suggested putting a company’s business card in the Newsletter and also in the programs and on the website. |
